Hello 2nd grade families! I have gradually been taking over a bit more responsibility in the classroom, and am thrilled to be teaching a Themed Literature Unit. Some of you, like myself a few months ago are probably wondering what a Themed Literature Unit is. Good question! In class for the next two weeks, during our reading block, we will be reading, discussing and working with one theme in mind. I'm really looking forward to seeing and hearing all the great ideas from your students minds!

In our current day and age many of us are taught to be completely self sufficient. We are taught that we can and should do things on our own. While that is an important concept to understand and practice it is also vital for our students to understand that when we work together, we can accomplish more. In our Themed Literature Unit we will be focusing on three main ideas: 1) we all have strengths and weaknesses 2) sometimes we all need help 3) working together we accomplish more. As well as focusing on these social ideas we will also be working with literacy skills. Students will work on character analysis and recognizing important plot points in the stories we will be reading.

Families, there is work for you too! I know that your students are going to be excited to come home at the end of the day and talk about working together, and I hope you will be able to join in their conversation! Your students will have three at home assignments that they will need your help with, I hope we can all work together to extend these concepts from school to our homes.
